Formed in 2005 by Brazilian composer and vocalist David Chong, Tatu Rei is comprised of some of Australia’s premium world and jazz musicians.
Latin and flamenco guitarist Nathan Slater comes from a long line of musical masters, bringing to Tatu Rei a deep melodic knowledge and rhythmic spark which accentuates James Giligan’s solid work on acoustic bass.
Oliver Williams comes from a decade dedicated to the language of Brazilian music which underpins the strong rhythmic sense of Tatu Rei. Oliver studied a postgraduate in brazilian percussion in one of the top music schools in São Paulo.
Add to this the flair and sophistication of well respected Australian pianist/accordion player Steven Grant and you have a band which is composing and performing some of the most impressive world, jazz music within Australia.
Influenced by some of the bossa and samba greats and the contemporary jazz masters of today, the compositions are original and moving. Sung in Portuguese, David explains the lyrics, but the audience needs no explanation to feel the beauty and passion in the music.
Brazilian jazz at its best combining samba, bossa grooves with contemporary jazz melodies and arrangements. The music is classy and inspiring leaving you wanting more.
