Biography

Formed in 2005 by Brazilian Born David Chong, Tatu Rei is comprised of some Australia’s premium World and Jazz musicians.

Neda Rahmani and Mark Grunden come from a decade dedicated to Brazilian batucada and Samba with all drum band Tumbarumba, which underpins the strong Rhythmic sense of Tatu Rei.

Latin and Flamenco guitarist Nathan Slater comes from a long line of musical masters, bringing to Tatu Rei a deep melodic knowledge and rhythmic Spark which accentuates young VCA graduate James Giligan’s solid work on bass.

Add to this the flair and sophistication of well respected Australian Pianist and Andrew James and you have a band which is composing and performing some of the most impressive World, Jazz music within Australia.

Influenced by a concoction of some of the Bossa and Samba greats of the 60s and the contemporary Jazz masters of today, the compositions are original and moving. Sung in Portuguese, David explains the lyrics, but the audience need no explanation to feel the beauty and passion in the music.

Brazilian Jazz at its best combining Samba, Bossa grooves with Contemporary Jazz melodies and arrangements. The music is precise, classy and a beautiful combination that leaves you wanting more.
